Good theories, all of which make sense, though I'd have to say that those two kids are probably highly symbolic in the sense that they probably represent everything and everyone. One most likely is John, the other, who cares. They represent the male and female sexes of humanity. They both represent humanity from the moment humans were first capable of looking to the stars and wondering what's up there (Gods, intelligent life, etc). John symbolizes every little boy who's ever looked up at the stars wondering what's really out there. John, being "humanity's last hope" (as well as the main character of the entire story) symbolizes the sexist terminology of "mankind" (that encompasses all of humanity) as well as the "male" portion of the spectrum. The female represents every little girl who's ever looked up at the stars wondering what's really out there. The female represents the sexist terminology of "mankind" as well as the more gender specific "female" side of the spectrum.

As for the planet, that's also probably symbolic of every planet colonized by "mankind." Outer-colonies, inner-colonies, or even the mighty Earth itself. Where the two kids in the CG ad are located doesn't truly matter, because it's symbolic of the entire populated area of space where humans reside or resided.

As we all know, Bungie gets extremely "deep" with their stories, be it on a religious level, literature level, or imaginary level. And that's why we love them. And hate them. But mostly love.
