Possible reasons for Halos firing
Posted By: maxthehedgie <tjboz@viawest.net>Date: 5/11/06 8:38 p.m.

What I'm about to write her is going to either make a lot of people happy, a lot of people unhappy, or both, but here's what I think happened:

I support the theory that humans are modern Forerunners. I believe the Forerunners, the first advanced species to emerge when the population of sentient life was at a high point in the galaxy (hence people calling them Forerunners), were the model citizens of galactic society. They were esteemed, respected, and loved by most. But there were probably some, such as the Prophets- who I think were around back then, that weren't content. Being maybe a step or two down the technological ladder, they got cocky and figured they could have their way on whatever issue was causing strife. So they started waging war on our ancient, ancient Forerunner ancestors. And, of course, we immediately started handing out and ass-whupping with our freakin' awesome weapons. The war probably lasted a decade or two at least and went all the way up until the Halos being fired.

Why would this be? Because the Prophets, being at a severe disadvantage, couldn't beat us by conventional means- we had them beat there. No, they had to come up with something clever, something that would be a trheat to us. So they created something adaptive, something that could draw information from our personnel, pool it together, and allow them to continue their petty little war. They designed something that could gather phenominal intelligence and slaughter our people by the 100s at the same time. They devised something that, if even a tiny amount survived, it would start all over again. They created the Flood, no doubt one of THE greatest scientific endeavors of all time.

The Flood could hurt us, super cool advanced weaponry or not. Once it had us, it would rip out our guts, drain our brains of everything useful, and then turn us into drooling, stinky zombies that could lift things the size of cars and beat little kids to death with them. And, in all likelihood, the galactic community wasn't thrilled about the Prophets making war on us in the first place. They probably shunned them every time the Galactic Council convened. And that's why the Flood can subvert sentient life in general. It was revenge for the community's lack of support for the Prophet cause.

Of course, we panicked. We couldn't come up with a quick, easy solution. The Flood was too complex and it changed too often for any vaccine to work. The best thing we could do was mow it down with sustained gunfire, but that only worked for a while. It had been released on such a large scale that systems throughout the galaxy were plagued by the Flood. Thus, we built the Installations, 7 great weapons that would kill everyone, but at least give the next generation of sentient life a chance. In our absence, the Flood would starve and die off. The Halos were weapons of last resort.

But, I feel we never used them. We either found a way to get rid of the Flood or eventually collected enough military force- our own and those of other species, most likely- to form a massive strike force and systematically wipe out all the Flood one system at a time with forces big enough to be deemed overkill, though it helped in the thoroughness. Whatever we did, we killed off all but the few Flood we kept alive/in stasis on the Halos and a few other places for study.

However, the Halos still fired, hence the present situation. If it wasn't OUR decision to do it, then whose was it? The Prophets did it, I say. The Installations were probably the most well-guarded secret in history. I mean, just look at where they were located; out-of-the-way systems with only a gas giant, a reasonably-sized star, and maybe some rocks here and there- the last place anyone would look. Useless, uninhabited places. They were so well hidden that we probably didn't even have any naval forces in the area, which would attract attention. Besides, there aren't any empty ships floating around Installation 04 or 05, are there? Didn't think so. The Prophets, at a severe loss in the war, were probably hanging on by a hair, dashing from place to place, constantly being pursued by our forces and those of our allies. The most they could probably do was try to get what little intelligence they could glean from us. At last, they most likely found something pertaining to the Halos. It probably read something like this: "The Installations are a series of 7 ring-shaped constructs, 10,000 kilometers in diameter. Each has a focusing array to diffuse a phased pulse, via generators on various parts of each Installation, to the areas of the galaxy surrounding them. The phased pulse frequency, amplitude, etc. can be calibrated to specifically target a single type of organism. This weapon can effectively elminate all Flood-" And that's where the must have stopped reading. If they had continued they would have read, "However, this phased pulse can only be calibrated to a certain degree. All species in the selected organism calssification, sentient species in this case, would be effected. There is NO way to make the phased pulse target a less general population under the limitations of current technology. These weapons are absolutely of last resort.

End of Briefing

Delete this file or splice it into a processing buffer. Constant movement lessens the chance of interception."

And so, they scrounged up every little tidbit of info they could find to try and locate the Installations or the Ark. They probably found the Ark, which would have also been hidden and left unguarded. Not very conspicuous... I mean, for as long as our science fiction people could imagine, we were what would be considered a backwater world in the middle of nowhere. And then, they triggered the Installations and everyone died.

If so, why are we hear? Why are the Prophets still around? The first question is simple. When the Halos were under development and the whole scheme was created, there had to be a fallback plan. Killing everyone and hoping the best for those who would follow wasn't enough. It was the easy way out- it was quitting. So we devised a method of allowing our species to manifest again after the firing of the Installations. The Ark would function like so: a planet much like the Forerunner homeworld would be found and the massive Ark facility would be built on it. This would unleash a harmless viral agaent or some such organism that would accelerate an indigenous, non-sentient primate species to rapidly evolve into humans over several 1000 years. They must have searched everywhere. A planet with the right climate, gravity, and terrain to be almost exactly like the homeland must have been one out of a million. Not only that, but there had to be a primitive ape species on it that wouldn't reach sentience on its own for several 1000 years, in which time the Installations could be fired. But, they did it, evidently, or none of us would be here today.

And what of the Prophets? Well, THAT is a different story. Yesterday, I speculated in this thread at:

If you read that, you can see how the Forerunner ship from High Charity seems just right to dock with the Ark as it was seen in the Halo 3 trailer. And that's when it hit me. I had thought that the Prophets must have waited out the phased pulse in some sort of safehouse that the Forerunners must have built to survive a Halo firing, but that doesn't make as much sense as what I thought of just recently. I say the ship is the safehouse. If it can plug into and is possibly necessary to work the Ark and fry everyone everwhere, then I think it highly probable its hardened against phased pulses. The Prophets found the Ark, fired the Ark from the vessel's command center with the false knowledge that they would be wiping the galaxy clean of all us Foreruner scum, and were shocked to discover that their landing parties outside were suddenly bits of ionized dust. Dispairing but never ones to give up to their enemy's horrible trickery, they figured out that they pointy thing sticking out of the ground was a ship and they took it. Knowing that nobody would be around to help the survivng Propphets, they probably put themselves into stasis for manny, many millenia and awoke some time later to con unsuspecting species into helping them control the galaxy, saying that it was all part of some religious scheme. They were probably confident they had seen the last of us and they could now rule the whole galaxy any way they wanted, no medling Forerunners in sight.

I ask you to now bring your attention to the events of April 20th, 2525. The scout vessel Argo wad dispatched to Harvest Colony when communications with the planet were lost. The Argo never returned. A battlegroup of warships is lost in the next investigation, save for the Heracles, which escaped to tell the harrowing tale. Vice Admiral Preston Cole then brouhgt in our whole fleet and stomped on the Covenant's asses. Hence present circumstances. Anyway, the whole point of that was to show how the human-Covenant war started. A Covena t ship or two was probably just doing a little exploratory thing when it found a human colony on the fringe of our empire. The Prophet in command (since the tale of the "dastardly Forerunners" was probably a choice bedtime story and subject of history within their species and ONLY their species, in order to keep the rest of the Covies in the dark) most likely had a cow and went berserk on poor little Harvest. Guess what, Prophets... we're back! What now, biatches?

And so it started. The Prophets knew they had to get rid of us once and for all. Burning the hell out of us from orbit was effective, but at our height, we had 800 worlds under our control. Even for the Covenant, that would take a long time to glass and even LONGER when we started shooting back. So, they said, "Hey, the Halos worked once. Why don't we use them again? We can just evacuate into our Forerunner ship and go into stasis again. Man, how original!" How 'bout no, Scott?

And all this time, we were blissfully unaware of our ancestry and what great things we had done in our time. Had we managed to get past our differences, civil wars, and rebel uprisings, we might have done what we were supposed to do: "Reclaim", hence what Forerunner AIs call any humans they see nowadays. We were supposed to find our people's relics, rapidly increase our technological level, learn of our ancestors' deeds, absorb their knowledge, and rise to lead the people of th Mlky Way once again. But the Prophets beat us to it, the bastards. And now, we have to fight them.

What other proof do I have for any of this? Good ol' Hierarch Mercy's words, when asked Truth's destination by MC:

"Earth. To finish what we started. And this time, none of you will be left behind."

See? Those wrinkley old men really know how to hold a grudge. A 100,000-year-old grudge. PMSing Prophets. Anyway... Finish the Fight! Halo 3, w00t!

Note: I'm confident the part about us being the Forerunners is true, the ship docking with the Ark seems too good to be coincidence, why else would the Prophets be PMSing if we didn't fight with them 100, 000 years ago, how else could the Forerunners (us) come back if the Ark didn't do something like what I said, and you have a brain at all, you've already thought of this from what the Monitors, Prophets, and various other characters have said. Also, if I die, I'm pretty sure it's because I beat Bungie to the pucnh. If a special ops team of map designers in ninja suits comes to my house and shoots me in the head, you guys will be the first to know :)

P.S. If you want to comment and have me see it, please email me. I don't go to the forums often and I'll know you said something far sooner if you just email me. Thankies, ma peepz.
