I agree that the well-nigh-invulnerable force shield is primarily a game mechanic to make Tartarus tougher for the boss battle... it would be less so if it operated more like either the Elites' shields (if tougher) or the Jackals' (same toughness, but can be flanked) and if its presence was foreshadowed a bit earlier. Its integration into the game was a bit rough. Heck, if Mr. T had just been really tough as a Brute, immune to headshots somehow, and fired the Fist offensively that might have been more in keeping with the storyline. It probably would have made for even more unsatisfying gameplay, though, repeatedly getting shoved off the platform by a grav pulse or dragged in from across the map for HammerTime... However, let's not write the whole thing off to auctoral fiat. Bungie's usually pretty good at giving a storyline angle on this kind of stuff too. (Well, okay, the WSTE-M argues against this but I can see that the dual-wielded shottie was just too cool to pass up.) I think that speculation on in-game motives isn't entirely futile, as it may cast other actions in the storyline in a new light. Or it may not, in which case it'll be fruitless... but we won't know until we look. -- Steve's looking for these lines of speculation to create their own internal contradictions, really. That would falsify them for certain. |
