A natural element is certainly a traditional part of Japanese poetry, but it isn't required. If I understand it correctly (and I'm Western, so there's a good chance I don't), a good haiku is meant to paint a scene quickly and deftly, in much the same way that a few lines placed just so can be an excellent drawing. The overall feeling should be one of more depth and lushness than can actually be achieved in those few syllables, I believe. This sense of detail, when no detail is present, is the mark of a well-written haiku. Since haiku entered 'Net culture, that's been slightly skewed. However, the tendency to have a thematic "turn" of sorts has increased tenfold; such a turn was not extremely common in original Japanese haiku, but is very popular in geek haiku. -Nate |
