I haven't worked with IK much personally (except to make a dog that ran about two feet and crashed into the floor "realistically") but I tend to assume that when they are adding hit animations, they are combined together with the actual knockback to create a more realistic reaction to being shot or hit. Think about it like this: if characters limbs simply got knocked back, they'd look more like a terminator than a human. Maybe Matt means that they clutch their wound for a moment, or shake off the pain.

Just a guess.....
