Actually, before you gripe about the OGL optimization in MacOS, you should really try working with the Windows drivers.

The MacOS OpenGL drivers are really not that bad. They could be made to run better with non-ATi cards, but Apple has always had the attitude that "if it don't come from the factory that way, then it ain't right".

This might change with ATi's recent blunder, who knows. Maybe Apple will finally find someone else to OEM.

But all-in-all, MacOS OpenGL is an exceptional version of the renderer. Not suprising seeing that Apple worked closely with SGI to complete it.

Lastly, Rainbow 6 was completed by a very small team and, as I understand it, ported by, like, one or two guys. Graphics optimizations are the least of it's problems, as I have yet to be able to play a game of it that did not end in a crash since I purchased the game.

Also, it's important to keep in mind that Apple's weak showing as far as game developer support only looks pitiful in comparison to what they "promised". Steve said he would support gaming a ton. No luck yet. He also said that the OSX beta would be ready by summer.... and?

The truth is, Apple often puts the cart before the horse. They put all their eggs in one basket. They count their chickens. They, in terms of playing off the public, lie or misjudge the truth or speak to soon (whatver it is) - a lot. However, they don't deserve to be endlessly barraged with verbal assaults on assundry message boards for this. Plenty of other big developers miss their ship dates too.. and seem to catch a ton less flak for it. <cough>Windows 95</cough>

With all this said, yes - Apple still needs to do a lot of work to increase it's relationship with the game developer market. The best thing you can do is contact them, in any way you can consider, to tell them you care about gaming on the platform - us creative types like to play games too! - and see if you can get them back on track.

Play nice.
