You can actually kill elites quite fast that way, and : you can take out grunts without having to switch between weapons. The battle rifle works fine on grunts, too. Do you play on legendary? The SMG doesn't seem to work too well for me on legendary, vs. elites. It would probably work fine up close, but I am usually keeping my distance. :)
