I used 4 plasma grenades that were dropped by dying covies. This is the same setup that I used to get on top of the level in single player.
And as for getting to the very bottom of the security shaft, I believe that it is impossible. The whole reason I went through the very long and drawn out process of getting a checkpoint down there with a hog was so that I could try to find a way down. But no luck. Walls are completely vertical, no ledges, nothing.
Anyhow, fun tryin.
