"outrunning" is irrelevant; what you need to do is withstand the fire that does get through, just long enough to get back to your base. If you have enough health to withstand the bombardment, maybe you have enough to fight him head-on anyway. Maybe not; I don't know. In Halo 2, with destructible vehicles, you could bail out just as you're about to run out of Banshee health, and continue running on foot.
