I wouldn't give up on the idea just yet. Rem that the movie(s) and screenshots are from early/earlier builds of the game. I got that notion from some of Matt's posts. What the forum crowds are seeing are not JUST spoonfeeds from the game, but OLDER spoonfeeds.

Perhaps the Halo ring projection in the "control?" room that we have seen is just a preliminary effort. I think it is entirely possible to have a much more detailed projection as well as working control "planes" (floating panels) that allow manipulation or enhancements to the projections.

This would really provide motivation to players in order to compel them to risk life and limb to take over such bases (or at least sneak into them like the Marine in the movie seems to have done at the start). Who knows, he might have even been teleported there, but I doubt that since it takes the fun out of sneaking in.
