If Halo and Marathon do indeed take place in the same Universe (They probably don't) and if marathon is suppose to take place AFTER Halo, then perhapse the Cole Protocol is still in effect. For the laymen, the Cole Protocol stated that no ship should inadvertantly lead the Covenant (or in this case, the Pfhor) to Earth. The crew of marathon was probably bound by regulation to avoid all earth bound vectors. Even if the marathon couldn't get anywhere near earth in three months, the Pfhor would probably have no problem at judgeing the ship's trajectory and get a head start at finding Sol.
