Like all products, and no matter the extent of testing, variable component quality is unavoidable, as manufacturing plants age etc. Especially when, like Apple, you don't make your own parts. Me, the 1st gen iPod (5gb) I got about three years ago, still works great. Same battery, heavy use, no problems. Far as I know, the battery used is a top of the line Toshiba laptob battery; you can probably google the exact specs. Your milage may vary. Beware of abandoned colony ships.
