In Response To: The First Marathon Is The Best (Neoptolemus) : I can't believe how bungie screwed the new Marathon games up. I like them all but for different reasons. Marathon 1: The best of the 3 for dark, spooky and creepy maps with a raised-hair-on-the-neck feeling. Awesome story. Addictive. Features far beyond any game of the era such as 8 player net play, realistic physics, and aiming up and down. I still put the Marathon 1 CD in my player and listen to the music. This captured the imagination of a generation of gamers. Suffered from a nasty mouse bug and some problems picking items up in Total Carnage. Marathon 2: A long awaited, tearful-sweet reunion in a fabulous new engine. What a hoot to play now with double shotguns and media you are immersed in. Ambient sounds! Huge screen to look at! The maps were by far the most fun to fight and explore in this version. The anthem totally kicks ass. Great story continuation that gave you meaning in the maps you were playing. We love to hate Durandal, except in a tragic episode when we are forced to turn him off... NOT! HAHAHAHA DIE YOU SWINE!! All in all, the best of the 3 IMHO. Marathon Infinity: The most technically proficient map making seen in Marathon, truly a masterpiece. Suffered from a story line that was only good for discussing afterwards, not for playing the game. Maps often didn't match the story, as if they had a bunch of maps they did and someone tried later to poorly stitch them together with a story. The engine really benefited from merged physics. The under-media SMG was very welcome. The best thing to actually come out of Infinity, besides it's new improved physics merging and 5 texture engine etc was Forge and Anvil. These tools and others like them, made by the dedicated marathon fans, is what is making Marathon live forever. |
