In Response To: Origin of the Human "Marathon Symbol" (Id) I believe that Reg Dujour, the artist behind M1 and the designer the the Marathon symbol, stated that the Marathon symbol was intended to evoke images of a world within a world. Think this way: a world is, to quote the 15th (!) definition of "World" in the American Heritage Dictionary, "A celestial body such as a planet." Right, you say; that means that, say, Mars is obviously a world, but stretch it to, oh I dunno, it's moon Deimos. Now imagine that you, for whatever reason, decide to hollow it out and convert it into a Tau Ceti-bound colony ship named Marathon. Get the picture? ;) A much more succinct way to look at it is this: the world of the ship Marathon is contained within the world of the moon Deimos. But it was more fun to type the first way. |
