I think this is just another one of the conventions found in the video game world. If they did speak out every message, the voice information would take up several times the space of the actual game. Also, nobody would want to fart around listening to one of Durandul's over long Philisophical Tyrades, when there's stuff to kill. I think that the text was a good Idea, as it puts no limit on how involved the story. Unlike Halo, which has no text what so ever, relies souly on dialog which puts a constraint on how advanced story is.
