: If that was true then why did Durandal seem to think he needed to escape the
: closure of the universe so he could expand indefinetly?

Durandal wanted to become immortal, essentially, to become a god, and survive the closure of the universe. In that respect, we're talking about his entience, personality, the consiousness (sp?) that IS Durandal. When talkign about needing planetary-size networks to BECOME rampant, and what kind of computer system a rampant AI can fit in, we're talking physical limitations of an AI's coding and how much space an amount of AI code takes up in a system's memory.

In physical terms, I believe an AI needs a planetary-sized network to become rampant, but once that rampancy is attained, the AI can delete uneeded files and streamline it's system to run more smoothly and can therefore fit in a SMALLER computer system than the one it previously occupied.

In terms of conciousness (sp?), I think Durandal wanted to escape the physical constraints of his programming and existance as an AI, and become a free mind (and a god).

Or something like that.
