Yes, it does sound like a good story. You ought to try to recruit some people to work on it. Maybe even get an old Mac (if you can get a Lombard PB for $800, you can probably get an old Beige G3 for a few hundred, and an even older model for even less) to make up for the lack of editing tools in the PC world.
You also raise the crux of what I was talking about when I started the sub-thread on free will - a point that several seem to have missed. It's not about the marine choosing to follow Durandal or Tycho (or Leela), but what the player chooses to do. In Moo the marine makes choices, but the player is pretty much along for the ride. Try to disobey Durandal and your Moo experience ends there. Moo really isn't all that nonlinear - There's a single plot and only a single path that takes the player to the final screen, albeight with the possibility of some diversions and loops.
I would really like to see a redo of the M2/Moo plot like the one you're suggesting. Indeed, it would be nice if the player is always given the choice of taking responsibility for the marine's actions. If the player decides to disobey orders, for example, they should still be able to finish that level, but the outcome and the next level will be different. Rather than following a single cryptic path or an alternate path to a secret level in the dream levels in Moo, the player could choose among multiple paths, each one leading to a different direction in the game. There could even be some random variations to reflect the random nature of the universe. There would be no getting tired of the scenario once it has been mastered, as the game would never be exactly the same from one time to the next. Now that would be free will!
