Isn't it possible that Durandal could have been one of those five? It does not say that these AIs were destroyed, it only says the net was shut down. And since we beleive that Strauss was experimenting with rampancy, the 5 AIs have been left intact in confined systems so that they could later be utilized for rampancy experiments. The marathon would provide a testing ground for Strauss that would not put earth's network in danger of a widespread of rampancy. Than Durandal contacted the Pfhor and brought them to Tau Ceti so that their attack would free Durandal from Strauss' control and allow his rampancy to naturally develop unhindered.
