I figured the "health" stations are energy chargers - good for charging any electronic gizmo that has the proper plugs. The Pfhor probably use'em to recharge their Hunter suits and whatever dull utilitatian tools they have that are never seen in the game. So, you need an adapter (the S'pht Energy Converter, for instance) to use 'em.
They have a great transfer rate though, recharging your suit within seconds - must use superconductors of some kind.

Heh, I could probably think up some good technobabble - in fact, I have - but none of it really works within the context of the game. Saving the game is a metagame device, not an actual plot point, like the guy said.
