In Response To: Re: I wish I were a cyborg (Steve Levinson)

: Speaking of being a cyborg, we can joke all we want about all the fun we'd
: have, but I think that the use of cybernetic implants in humans is
: inevitable.

Glasses? Contactlenses? Pacemaker? Once the road is opened, who knows where it will lead.

: If anything, we'll be the Borg - let's just hope that we
: find the balance to avoid the exploitaiton of technology that we see in
: the Star Trek series. But just think of the advantages - and I'm not
: talking about the silly benefits being tossed around here. No need for an
: HUD - youl'll have information instantly at your "fingertips" at
: all times. You'll interface directly with networks and computers in your
: environment.

Spam will be a bummer, not to mention virii

: You'll drive what ever passes for a car, or a space ship for
: that matter, by just thinking about where you want to go. Forget about
: memorizing information in school - the virtual classroom of the future
: will teach you how to access information and how to sort and evaluate it,
: and how to think, rather than the information itself.

Wellllll, I have here about 5 inputdevices (which can be improved), a grey blob of amazing complexity which sorts even unasked!! information, memories and fantasies, and about 4 appendages (apply m/f where nescessary) to control my enviroment, not to mention this handy cultural thingy called 3R (reading, riting and rithmic*).
Handling massive amounts of very boring data, there is a niche for binary computer-use.

: Why learn useless
: facts of history when they're already there? Instead, learn how to
: interpret history.

Fire yer history teacher.
Actually, I really hope to have someday a schoolsystem where 3monthly a teacher gets evaluated by his/hers pupils, and be sacked when appropriate.
Some teachers are worth fighting for, others are to be avoided at all costs.

: The genious of the future will be the person who comes
: up with novel ways applying information - today's IQ tests will become
: meaningless.

Heh, aren't they already meaningless because it depends on cultural backgrounds?
Read somewhere an iq test applied to bushpeople (africa), with a problem about where to go when in danger.
A a house
B a tree
C something else

correct western answer:A, by bushstandards, being chased by a an elephant and running into a house is a sure way to get the house leveled, so B.

I wonder what kind of iq-test Ian.M Banks could create for it's Cultural Worlds :)
