: I spent about 1/2 hour, then hit the guide. Only time I've needed it, as yet.
: Interesting that we both got stuck in the same place.

My own policy is that I will hold off on a spoiler guide for as long as possible, but once my patience runs once out the game has "lost" and I will use the guide immediately every time I get stuck after that.

: >but I tend to favor exploration over action,
: >which is a very personal taste.

(IMHO) Exploration and action should be present in about the same amounts, since they are a sort of feedback cycle. Action is the way to unlock new areas to explore, and exploration leads to new areas and more action. Two common extremes throw off that balance, however: Requiring the player to explore the entire level before all tasks can be completed (the lack of monsters to kill just leads to long uneventful stretches) or when the level has infinite or just plain too many monsters (it is no longer possible to "secure" an area and explore it in peace).

: Frankly, too much action is just numbing nonsense. I run Marathon for the
: immersion, anyway, not really the fighting.

I somewhat agree with this... As above, huge piles of monsters and endless constant slaughter doesn't really do it for me either. There should be specific major battles with a few easy monsters here and there just to keep you on your toes.

: I fact, I'd say it's a constant issue, especially in
: close quarters, and I never "corrected" it because it adds a
: layer of challenge within the cheating.

This reminds me of the best physics model I ever made... It dropped bombs (rockets with zero velocity) with a huge blast radius and damage. The only way for the player to survive firing (you couldn't run away fast enough) was to use the gun's recoil to hurl yourself out of range before the bomb went off. Surprisingly fun to use, especially in Waldo World Arena...
