True. Thinking about it more, a star simply orbiting at a pronounced angle to the galactic plane would fit the scenario without too many headaches.

I do wonder how much thought Bungie actually put into it at the time, beyond having a cool-sounding hook for a sequel which - as Hamish noted - never got made.
