I'm not suggesting that it traveled any significant distance in merely a millennium, but rather that after being ejected from the galaxy "millions" (so say, at least 1.5 ≈ 2 million but less than 500 million ≈ 1 billion?) of years ago, it made its way back into the disc by around a thousand years ago. Given that the sun makes an orbit through galaxy in around about 226 million years, that seems like a reasonable time scale.
