In truth this is all hinted at in the Cortana letters from Nathan Bitner back in early 1999.
Even the name Cortana itself has that shared connection:
"My name is Cortana, of the same steel and temper as Joyeuse and Durindana."
There is a darkness in the Cortana letters that Paul Russel refers to in his interview. Before it became "happy fun time Joe Staten land".
