Are you sure you're not misremembering that? I don't see it in the Nova History PDF: http://www.ambrosiasw.com/assets/files/graphics_products/evn/preambles/nova_preamble_1.pdf What I see is mainly what I remember: 1) the Polaris are more advanced mainly because they missed out on the dark age, and 2) it's still really annoying that they had to make the expedition leader's last name "Polaris" when that being the star they were heading toward was more than enough reason for the name. Ahem. : Also you seem to have forgotten the Wraith. And the Hyperoids. And Kont. Those all played an extremely small role in the game, as I recall.
