Truth be told, I think that trope is a little too prevalent in science fiction - it was fun the first time, but once you've encountered your fourth or fifth example of an 'Elder race', your immediate reaction to the next instance is bound to be something like "Yeah, yeah, ancient aliens, blah blah, what else is new?"
