You could read this either way. But you didn't really have many choices at the end of Marathon 2.

And as Durandal himself said after letting Robert Blake and the other humans go.

Good-byes were always hard for me. You
know I'll never let you go.

The ending of Marathon 2 was the perfect set up for a new adventure on some distant world.

But as we all know... Marathon 3 never happened.
