The nightmare comes first and the headless is next in the shapes dump, if that means anything.

Greg mentioned that the gas mask reduces the damage you take from headless slime, so maybe the point of the gas mask was immunity to the deadly green headless and they were a puzzle monster like the green oozes. The world may never know.
