Heh... you could put a lot of the odd stuff in the story down to that. :)
Timelines only need a minor change to be different timelines. have you ever seen the X-files episode 'Monday'. The whole episode is the same timeline over and over again each with little differences but all ending in an explosion and the death a large number of people. In each timeline, Mulder learns something different and eventually prevents the explosion in the last successful timeline. Sounds familiar doesn't it.

Apparently, the Pfhor destroy what they can't control.

The battle on Lh'owon had gone according to projections: that to trap Durandal and end the threat of Tau Ceti, we would, as we did with the Drinniol rebellion, be forced to use the "trih xeem." Forcing a star into early nova has proved most satisfactory at destroying what we could not control.

So destroying Durandal was the plan all along in this timeline.
