: Welcome to the Story forum
: Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)

: Does the Dream Levels and Failed Timelines section not help you?
: Here's the direct link.
: It contains some good attempts at trying to explain the multiple timelines.

: Also, you might find the Volunteers section useful. The Infinity levels were
: discussed at some length.

: However, there is still a lot we have to learn about Infinity. Indeed, I fear
: we will have to reverse engineer some stuff to get the pieces to all fit
: correctly.

: Cheers
: Hamish

I'm just starting to slowly work my way through Volunteers. I'll use it as a companion as I go through Infinity again.

I have some thoughts on the origin, though they may be a bit jumbled because I've been traveling for the last two days.

The SO is not mentioned in Marathon 2's final screen. Granted, he isn't mentioned in Marathon 1's final screen either, but it does open up a theory.
At some point after the end of Marathon 2(or at the end? The teleport at the end of ARLtS could have been the initial activation of Jjaro implants.) the SO could have voluntarily or involuntarily activated the Jjaro implants that cause him to jump between timelines.

An involuntary activation makes more sense to me as the SO for the first(Two? Manual and Ne Cede Malis) jumps doesn't bring along his weapons. After that point the weapons do transition with you, suggesting that the SO now has control over the ability.

I had some related thoughts about a quote from Chris Geisel and Greg Kirkpatrick, "Yes, the player is jumping from a number of possible futures trying to find the path (eat the path) that will allow him to survive the cataclysm on Lh'owon, and unite him with 11th clan in a way that Durandal never could. How the player is able to do this jumping has to do with the unique interaction between Jjaro technology and sentient creatures."

"...unite him with 11th clan in a way that Durandal never could."
What does this mean? Curiouser and curiouser...

"How the player is able to do this jumping has to do with the unique interaction between Jjaro technology and sentient creatures."
Could a subconscious desire for freedom have been responsible for the initial jump? We don't stop traversing timelines until we are specifically given our freedom, "To you, we are deeply grateful, and release what little hold we might, as Durandal, have had on your soul.

Go."

This seems consistent with everything I've read.

(Amusing coincidence: Yesterday my hotel room was on the seventh floor. Today it is in building seven.)
