Yeah it is hard to account for this difference. I guess you could argue that they are different enough to be considered separate timelines, but to me it seems like somebody changed their mind during the writing process (or forgot) and the result is a simple oversight. : In the Manual story, Durandal is on the back foot, he is the one retreating.
Admiral Tfear describes Durandal as on the back foot, yes. ;) It sure would look awful for the most decorated and Tfeared Admiral in the Pfhor fleet to get outplayed by an upjumped AI in one of their own ships. A better point is this: why would Tfear order the deployment of the trih xeem if Durandal was so roundly defeated? Perhaps the Jjarro space station was impregnable to their normal weapons, but they still seem capable of boarding it. ;) Food for though7.
