In Response To: Re: Temporal Starting Point (Godot) : The Dream Levels and Failed Timelines section explains why the manual story
The DL&FT section lists one difference between the manual and Ne Cede Malis. Durandal claims he slaughtered the Pfhor fleet and garrison in Ne Cede Malis, but in the manual Tfear claims he disabled Durandal's ship. As far as I can tell, both are true. Tfear describes taking losses but ultimately disabling Durandal's ship. Every other timeline in which they meet in battle (M2, Acme Station, Foe Hammer) ends the same: Durandal inflicts heavy casualties (a good old fashioned slaughtering) with his upgraded ship, but is ultimately disabled. Durandal says he destroyed the garrison.
Durandal says he "slaughtered" the Western Arm of their fleet.
To the Pfhor, "acceptable losses" is pretty vague. When most of your troops are slaves or the bottom castes of your society, most sacrifices seem acceptable. I think this doesn't preclude NCM and the Manual from being different timelines. Definitely doesn't prove it, though of course anything is possible if more information were to surface (ie the official ruling). Most likely, if there are differences, they aren't intentional (but that's getting pretty guessworky, even for me). "But what do I know." -Me, every day.
