I believe Hamish is referring to the door that gets you out of the Ooze hallways and to the save rune right before Barney, which stays locked upon second playthroughs and thus locks out the bottom levels if you've already passed through. The pipes have no effect on Barney that I can recall. I tried a couple of times, I think, even checking the Carnage Window. And I've played the whole game with the Gas Mask on since I got it, and I can assure you it does nothing to him.

What a strange message on Ascension...
