I don't think it affects Barney at all, but on my way to Barney I tried resting, but couldn't. I didn't try it on the door. Which door?

After viewing my inventory, I noticed the Alien Gemstone was out so it was draining my max vitality from Pathways into Cheating.

The message you get when you rest with the Alien Gemstone out is:

"You feel extremely weak, but are unable to rest and restore you health. Something is very wrong."

Another message I got before while I tried to rest up in Ascension during a real play through was:

"You have a strange and inexplicable feeling that it wouldn't be very sly to try and rest right now."
