You *can* use HTML-entity angle brackets, and you can even use genuine less-than / greater-than brackets, but only so long as the resulting text does not form what looks like a valid HTML tag. HTML entities get turned into < and > by the forum script when you preview or when you post, but they don't vanish from your browser unless they form what it recognizes as a proper HTML tag. What's even more frustrating is that there doesn't seem to be a way to write & lt ; (minus the spaces), even by using & amp ; lt ; (minus the spaces). The forum parses that as & lt ; (minus the spaces) and then your browser displays that as a lessthan. And & amp ; & amp ; lt ; (minus the spaces) gives you ampersand-lessthan. Grrr.
