Technically, Marathon's 5D space IS the result of portals technology. Marathon uses a portal-based engine; you just can't link your polygon edges (portals) to anywhere but another adjacent polygon edge. ("Polygons" here being used in the Marathon sense, which are actually volumes; not in the general 3D geometry sense of "triangles").
