You're getting into "re-implementing the engine" territory there. In which case you might as well use volumetric sectors instead of polygons, define the edges as portals, and go freakin' NUTS. Most of the portal tricks I've used have been in the aid of faking what Marathon already did, in the form of 5-D space...
