We don't hate DOOM. We may pretend we do, in a purely humorous fashion, but we don't regard it as the Hitler of video games.
What we, or at least I, hate is ignorant, whining little fanboi asses like you who have nothing better to do than come to an obscure Marathon forum and throw this crap at us like a zealot. DOOM and Marathon were created for different platforms and audiences. For a long time there was little room for competition, as there was no PC version of Marathon and no Mac version of DOOM.
As for your argument that Marathon is a DOOM clone, guess what? That was the trend at the time, the evolutionary pattern of 3D graphics. Using your logic, I could argue that every single goddamn FPS game released since 1998 is a Half-Life ripoff. Including your beloved DOOM 3.
DOOM 3, it should be pointed out, contains storytelling mechanics borrowed directly from Marathon and System Shock. The original DOOM's overhead map function could easily have been inspired by the mapping system in Pathways into Darkness. So why aren't we all up in arms over it?
Maybe it's because we, unlike you, have better things to do than sit around and whine about some game that has nothing to do with what we discuss here.
