In Response To: Victory is ours! (Boomer)

: Mario has crushed Doom.

: Against impossible odds, we have won a great victory against the vastly
: overrated pile of crap that is Doom, often falsely recognized as the very
: first action game created. You have fought well, my friends, but one of
: our enemies still stands: Half-Life. Go now, let's settle this.

To all of you overly hyped zealots panning Doom the way you are:

Without the work that ID has done, to begin with, who knows whether or not Marathon (or, for that matter, Pathways Into Darkness) would have existed, at least in the so-called 'marvelous' form they are today. Pathways Into Darkness was made about a year after Wolfenstein was released, and Marathon was released about a year after Doom. With ID software behind the wheel, they had completely shown the ropes for video game programmings, and took the video gaming genre to a WHOLE new level.

Now, let's take a little analysis here.

On this page here: http://www.marathon.org/steve/betas.html, it shows snapshots of the game in early development. As you can see, somewhat prior to the release of Doom, the screenshots following the first one show the more realistic environment that would otherwise be lacking. You'll also notice that if you play the level Grendel Lives on M1A1, it'll show a similar background environment and give you an idea of the engine, gameplay, etc (which, sadly, was not really different from PID). When Doom came out, at least in principle the game turned out to be progressive from the more linear characteristics it had in Wolfenstein, and without any other actually original companies to look up to (seeing as, by comparison to other FPS game producers, they were generally the only original company). Bungie, on the other hand, didn't even advance higher until after Doom was released. Were it not for Doom (or, to be more exact, the ingenuity of ID software), Marathon would've been the same choppy, watered-down, unoriginal and boringly slow game that Pathways Into Darkness turned out to be... And without all the beautiful complex maps with lighting and advanced textures. It would have been nothing. And even despite the way Marathon turned out to be a better hit than it most likely would have originally been, the bottom line shows that Marathon still is nothing. It was only important because it included a clever plot (which you could find elsewhere anyway) and had offered some tidbits to make a game last longer in order to save the trouble of other games contributing that. Marathon invented nothing.

Years later, sometime around the 21st century, people from different places in the world come to a place online called the Marathon Story forum (likely a place where people mostly talk about making scenarios with perverted Bananna Republic sponsors running around screaming, or about their secret desire to jack off to certain pictures in the terminal messages), impose their skewed perspective of 'superiority' and then prattle off about something they obviously know very little about. Who are you people trying to be anyway? Think playing Marathon apparently makes you more uniquely-structured, original, intelligent and inclined than those oh-so 'evil' and 'dumb' Doomers? You're just like one of those dumbass people who try to protest against violent acts the government makes by rioting in the streets and throwing rocks at cops, without even taking notice that other than the fact that you're already basing your so-called 'justification' on a skewed vision you have of what 'violence' is, but that you're also unaware of the fact that the leader may have been what gave you the oppurtunity to do the stupid shit you do in the first place (I'm not comparing this metaphor to the government in America today, just so you know). Of course, that metaphor, in spite of its very similar principles undertakes a highly different situation.

Still...

Well, screw you. I'll play Doom all I want, with the incentive to strap you to a chair and force you to watch me play Doom. It's ignorant people like you that try to act like you're 'unique' and 'in the minority' only to butcher an original image and turn it into another mass. Congratulations.

~Monkey out.
