Gees, Yoss, you sure went back a ways to catch up with old posts. This topic is of particular interest to me now because I've just gotten around to playing Halo for the first time. An X-Box has never been an option for me - not the way my wife hates it when I play video games. At least with my PowerBook, I can put on a pair of headphones (which I wear often to listen to music, anyway) and play to my heart's content when she's not in the room. I put off buying the Mac version of Halo when I read all the reports about how poorly it played, even on G5's, but now that I have a suped-up 17" PB, I thought I'd give it a try. I've been pleasantly surprised with how the game handles - the graphics run very smoothly - better than AO - proving once again that adequate RAM and a good graphics card are far more important that raw CPU processing power.
OK down to the real purpose of this post. I will have a lot more to say about Halo 1 when I've finished it - I'm only on level 3 or so - but Bungie has clearly catered to the masses. Marathon was a very sophisticated game - mature in story development and integration and logically sequenced. Halo has superb graphics, but I really miss the Marathon terminals. Without the terminals, with only a superficial story, Halo feels like just another FPS. There are other things I could nitpick on - I terribly miss map view - it's very easy to get lost - but the loss of the story element is the worst of it. I am having fun, however ;^).
The other thing of interest I will revisit when I finish Halo, but I am struck by the similarities to Marathon. I think this is the thrust of your post. I'ts not that Halo has a lot of tie-ins to Marathon, but Halo really is Marathon in many respects. I think that in many respects Halo is the result of porting the basic concept of Marathon to a modern engine, streamlining the story for the masses and adding new, cool features. I guess that dumbing down Marathon was the right thing to do - one need only look at sales figures - but those of use who cut our teeth on Marathon know what could have been.
More later . . .
