I would agree. The main interest point for me in Marathon was the hazy identity of the protagonist, and the odd metaphorical terminals. On top of that, it was mainly a free-range running shooter game. I don't think a MUD could properly simulate the style of Marathon, even if it was in the same universe. It's just not fun when perspective drops to the level of a lowly space colonist. (or whatever you may play as)
