In broad terms Halo kinda reminded me of Oni (although Halo is a better, more polished game by far).
What I mean is that both games are basically really cool combat systems wrapped in just enough game to set up a lot of amazingly fun combat. The story in both games pretty much just sets you up for a series of fun fights, the environments are just places where fun fights take place.
The combat in both is incredibly rich and enjoyable, but there isn't a lot more to either game in my mind. Oh, and Oni had a bazillion annoying jumping puzzles... Halo has no puzzles of any kind. Your call on which is preferable.
That being said, I really enjoyed both games. Best combat (hand-to-hand and armed, respectively) of any of the games I've played I think. They certainly generated more laugh-out-loud, can-you-believe-what-just-happened moments than any game (although Half Life 2 comes close what with the gravity gun).
/still wishing for someone to do a new game with the Oni combat system...
