Except that the Compiler form of S'pht was invented by the Pfhor. Seems more likely that in the post-M2 shattered Pfhor empire (the original basis of the Covenant), the compilers assumed (or seized) a more equal or even dominant role as Prophets.

Also keep in mind, the Flood were an idea Rob had long been playing with, all the way back to the "Fungal Zombies" of prerelease Marathon 2...
