In Response To: When did you first play a Marathon game? (Krazy) I first played Marathon before the full game was released in 1994. My oldest brother brought over his brand new Powerbook one night when he was home from college, and he said "I played a totally RAD game a few weeks ago, and tonight we must download the demo. It was only about 5 megs or so, but back in the day of 9600 baud modems it took somewhere near 3-4 hours to download. I can't begin to describe how awesome this game was. Since it was the demo there was no music, only sound effects and the still-scary-to-this-day "Somewhere in the Heavens... they are waiting" opening screen and partnered sound entrances. JESUS the game was scary. SO SO scary. We played it with the sound on full blast on a second color monitor at night in a thunderstorm with all the lights off. i really think that did it for me. The way that game managed to project such an amazing sense of polished involvement in the design and storytelling, I didn't realise it at the time but subliminally I knew I had to be witnessing perfection. It was such a huge leap ahead of anything before it or out at the same time, it was like comparing Myth to the old Apple-II game Chivalry. |
