In Response To: Marathon 10th anniversary coming up, help me out (Vid Boi) : Just about a month or two left until The Big Anniversary on December 21st. So
: Certainly basic information about the game, its cult following, the MSP,
Not that you have to be a member of a cult to play it. But I guess saying that "there have been some cult-type people who followed it" would be an understatement. Basically, anyone who's read the Story page has become a member of the cult. The fact that it can be played online, if you have AIM/iChat? Maybe something about the recommended sys reqs for Aleph One? I don't know if anyone knows much about what they actually are. Readers might assume that because it's an FPS it needs a $3000 computer, or that because it's a game from 1994 it can be played on a computer from 1994. Probaly don't bother to mention ways to find and play PID. One reason we're still speculating about aspects of the story is because nobody knows where Greg Kirkpatrick is. Put in a line about how Marathon: Resurrection is still underway, mb. The fact that Halo was originally planned as a sequel or prequel to Marathon, but now takes place in a completely different universe? Frankie's latest word on how there are no plans to make a sequel or an Xbox port? Definitely something about the editing scene. Third-party scenarios routinely rival'd the original with more complex levels, 20+ level campaigns (sometimes nonlinear), completely original texture sets, new weapons and units. Marathon mods focus on telling an epic story, unlike the Counter-Strike, Desert Combat, and Chaos UT that you usually hear about. But Marathon multiplayer is just as legendary. In that regard, Marathon is to Doom as Halo is to Doom, minus the huge outdoor areas and a few gametypes. Optionally mention that M1 and M2 scenarios are part of an era when fanbases had to write their own editors. Maybe mention Marathon's similarities to System Shock, since it deserves recognition as another game that was already trashing Doom in 1994. (Descent was 1995, right?) Would it make sense to solicit statements/quotes from Bungie employees, former employees, and major fans? Or maybe people who aren't obviously part of the cult. Valve employees, people at Mac game companies. Pipe dream. Bungie and their fans are part of the same cult. Evil and the Marathon Scrapbook are some of the earlier evidences of this. Remember to use the phrase "frog blast the vent core", though it probably doesn't count as a high-profile appearence. : (It would be awesome to be able to include a link to some
Or at least link to the demo versions. : Also, there are a lot of M1A1 extra stuff out there, I'd like to be able to
Er, none? Having to download two separate files is too complicated for most people already. Let them play the game Bungie made. |
