If it's any consolation to you, your post put a smile on my face. Although I disagree completely with the point you were making, it was a well written post =)
The thing about Halo is that while it has a pretty complex story, it's not like Marathon's story - a bunch of threads that stretch out in all directions and some go into concrete blocks that you have to attach with a pick-axe to follow them. Instead, the Halo story is a nice, neat, round ball of yarn that looks like you get everything right there...until you actually start following one of the threads, which is when you find out that they too lead into concrete walls.
Presumably Halo was designed that way intentionally, so that it would appeal to a broader audience - many gamers of today are of the opinion that a game which requires pen & paper, especially an action game, is a dull game (which the opposite is actually the Truth) and at the same time there had to be a huge story somewhere for those of us who came from PiD and Marathon, and for those who like complex games. And probably because Bungie seem to like thinking up vast backstories =)
