In Response To: When did you first play a Marathon game? (Krazy) December 25th, 1994. My brother unwrapped his Christmas present only to discover four disks and a manual in a plain cardboard box. Popping them into the LC III (25Mhz 68030), we navigated the installer from hell (the collectors' significance of these two facts escaping us) and launched this new game. I remember being appalled at how many settings I was forced to disable or reduce to make the game playable, especially since Pathways ran so well but it still looked pretty good if you squinted. The terminals were just nice breaks from the action, and cool sci-fi to read before diving into the next level. I didn't give the story or the ability to mod the game much thought before discovering (through AOL) the online community- the Story Page, Slurpee's Marathon site, Marathon Magazine, and the various mods and tools to download, and after that there was no going back. |
