Oh, so that's what that was... I got two of those back in early June addressed to my club's webmaster address. I joined the "free" version to see, and saw that there was no ability to read the acutal messages until I paid. So I left.

I didn't think it was a scam at the time, just a poorly-constructed Internet business model, but now I'm thinking it is one. I didn't think to look on Snopes.
