You're right Steve, and I kind of knew that going in I think. My portfolio looks pretty good, but it does contain work that doesn't really "apply" to very many real-world game jobs. Based on feedback from a couple of folks in the business, this is pretty much what I need to work on:

I need to have a better balance between fantasy and sci-fi (and realistic) subjects. I should also do some environments, vehicles, etc.

I need to brush off the markers and inks and do more trad media stuff, since most concept art is done traditionally even today.

I should have more "quick" studies... more finished than sketches, less polished than the finished paintings.

As you said, I need to focus on original characters, settings, etc.

I really need to get some 3D work in there. No point in waiting until my 3D stuff is as good as the 2D, just something to show competency. At a minimum, I should be skinning models... the texture work always gets good reviews, but I should show that I can texture characters, weapons, and vehicles as well.

If I can do all that without quitting my job or killing myself I might just have a shot ;)
