Because of regional dialects, evolutionary periods of any one language, and the original style of writing and author's intent, you're going to get different translations. Double that when you have to account for the same for the language you're translating to.

One of those Italian translations may have been the intact version from centuries ago while the other may be modernized. Same with the English translation "All hope abandon, ye who enter in!". Longfellow could have just used the simpler translation, but he may have felt the spirit of the phrase required a more dramatic English usage...or may have thought it best to translate it into the English of the time the original Italian version was written (1314), but that is doubtful, as it looks too modern. The third alternative is that he's using the English of the time when Inferno was actually translated into English, whenever that was. Fourth alternative is that Longfellow was a gaudy bastard. Anyways, regardless the minutia I think everyone understands the translation:

"Suckas steppin in, check yo'self and bring ya piece cuz sh*it's gon' get hella thick up in'is muth." I think this is a lot closer to Dante's original intent of his masterpiece.
